Oregon-Based Distance Learning Resources

  • Southern Oregon Education Service District
    The Southern Oregon Education Service District, located in Medford, Oregon, serves as the network hub for Oregon Access and all of the connected high schools in this 11,000 square-mile southwestern Oregon ESD region. Southern Oregon ESD provides scheduling services, first-level troubleshooting, and informal teacher training for those interested in learning more about using the network for instructional and collaborative purposes.

  • NWREL/Digital Bridges
    The Northwest Regional Education Lab, over the past four years, has worked with K-12 schools in a 7-state region developing planning and implementation strategies for the use of videoconferencing technologies in the classroom. The Digital Bridges project offers Web-site resources and also includes two videotapes. A K-12 Teachers' Guide will be available in print format during the summer of 2000.

  • Oregon Public Broadcasting
    OPB offers an array of services for educators including video-based content. OPB Teacher Resource Staff is currently preparing to offer portions of their teacher outreach events via the Oregon Access Network.

  • Oregon Technology Infusion Project (OTIP)
    This is a federally funded teacher preparation project that includes five Oregon community colleges, two Oregon universities, and technology-based partners across Oregon who will bring distance learning and other technology training to pre-service teachers.

  • Oregon Wireless Instructional Network (Oregon WIN)
    A higher-ed, community college, and K-12 consortium providing instructional services based on an ITFS infrastructure.

    A NETC Resource, classroom@work/tools@hand presents two real classrooms and their technology-rich learning projects, on a resource-rich Web site.

  • eCommunity - Ohio SchoolNet
    Ohio's K-12 technology-based Web site. Lots of resources geared toward teachers throughout Ohio. Big focus on distance education issues. Check out their distance education newsletter, just released in February of 2000.

  • Distance Education at a Glance
    A University of Idaho professor has put together a nuts and bolts guidebook for distance education including instructional strategies, various modalities (including videoconferencing). This site helps provide a picture of a complete distance education program.

  • Videoconferencing for Learning
    Comprehensive overview of videoconferencing, from the equipment to delivery skills. Also find collaboration opportunities, and a directory of videoconference sites and links.

  • The Teacher's Distance Education Handbook
    This is a nice listing of basic tips about using two-way video to deliver instruction. The authors point out that it's different from just watching television and it's also different from teaching in a regular classroom.

  • Distance Education Clearinghouse
    News, links, and up-to-the-minute information about cutting-edge delivery systems, updated almost daily. This site is a good one to have in your bookmarks! Be sure to check "Today's Distance Education Headlines" features.

  • The Learning Space
    This is a group of teachers in Washington state who have had first-hand experience making creative use of two-way interactive video technology in the classroom. They offer lots of advice and have some outstanding ideas when it comes to project-based delivery. The Learning Space staff is available to come to your school to provide teaching-from-a-distance workshops.

  • The Distance Learning Funding $ourcebook
    You can order the book online or you can take a look at their teaser list. There's some good information on the site about foundations that fund telecommunications projects for schools, about grantwriting, and other related topics.
